Acupuncture FAQs

What can I expect in my first acupuncture appointment?
During your first session, Jamie will begin by questioning you about your health history. Depending on your health concerns, he will do physical examinations such as testing your range of movement and locating the area that is the cause of your pain. And with a more traditional Acupuncture evaluation he will feel your pulse and examine your tongue. These assessment tools will allow Jamie to recommend a treatment plan for your specific concerns.

During an acupuncture treatment, you will lie comfortably on a treatment table. Jamie will stimulate acupoints on various areas of your body, as per the treatment plan. The acupuncture needles remain in place for 15-30 minutes before being removed.

Do acupuncture needles hurt?
Most people feel minimal or no discomfort. Acupuncture needles are very fine – they are much smaller than those used for dry needling or even blood tests!

How many treatments will I need?
This can differ from person to person. The good news is that most people will experience some relief of symptoms with the first treatment. If we’re focusing on an acute concerns such as a recent injury, fewer treatments are required. For complex and long-term chronic conditions, longer treatment plans are often required.

In your initial session, a treatment plan will be formulated for your specific needs. This is when Jamie will let you know the approximate number of treatments to suit your health goals.

Are the Acupuncture Needles sterile?
Yes. All the needles used are single use and individually packaged for safety and hygiene purposes.

What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
Dry needling is used by a manual therapist such as a physiotherapist, chiropractor or remedial massage therapist. These therapists are able to use dry needling with minimal training, and may only treat trigger points.
Acupuncture needling is a therapy that requires a practitioner to become a qualified acupuncturist to use it. Jamie studied for 4 years to be able to offer acupuncture as a therapy.

As Jamie is both a qualified acupuncturist and remedial massage therapist, he is able to offer acupuncture and dry needling. This combination of traditional therapy and modern biomechanics allows him to work with a range of pain-related conditions.

Naturopathy FAQs

What can I expect in my first naturopathy appointment?
During your first session, Trish will ask you about your health history and goals. You will discuss topics such as your current diet, lifestyle, stress levels and energy levels. If warranted, there may also be physical examinations such as measuring your blood pressure. Trish will then use this information to put together a personalised treatment plan.

As every person is different, every plan is unique. Trish may provide dietary advice, suggest lifestyle changes, and prescribe herbal and nutritional supplements to relieve symptoms and correct any deficiencies.

How many consultations will I need?
Some conditions are quick to resolves, while others take more time. If you have been living with your health issues for a long time, it may take time to see significant improvements in your health.

Will I need to get a lot of expensive testing done or take dozens of supplements to see results?
Not at Burnett House! Although Trish offers a variety of medical and functional tests, she understands that not everyone can afford to do extensive testing. She only recommends the tests that she believes will help to give a greater depth of knowledge about your health concerns.

Trish also offers practitioner-only nutritional and herbal supplements. However, she is able to work within your budget, and will only recommend specific supplements that are personalised to your specific needs.
